On 22 May 2011, the Sunday Times Travel section said:-

“King Mohammed VI succeeded his father in 1999, but it seems less likely that Morocco will go the way of Tunisia, as the young king is generally popular and the country is freer than most of the Maghreb. There were demonstrations on 20 February, some in the new part of Marrakech, and again a month later when it was felt that the King had reneged on promises of constitutional reform. But Prince Charles and Camilla visited on 4 April; and, despite the bombing in a cafe in Marrakech on 28 April, there are no Foreign Office restrictions for Morocco – the incident was attributed to an Al-Qaeda splinter group, rather than a ground-swell of anti-tourist feeling”

In brief, Marrakech is safe and certainly a lot safer than London in the UK. In the aftermath of the bomb in Place Djemma El Fna, there is heightened security in the whole of Morocco. In addition, the vast majority of the Moroccan population are appalled by the incident and are regularly marching in support of peace as a result.

Riad Tzarra

“This beautifully restored riad has four rooms around a pleasant courtyard with a plunge pool. The delicious breakfast can be taken on the roof terrace with views over the medina, while a home-cooked candle-lit dinner is served near the fireplace if you want to eat in. In the residential quarter of Kaat Benahid, you get a real taste of Moroccan life.”

September 2009

“Lovingly restore by renowned architect Christophe Siméon, this elegant house is in one of the oldest neighbourhoods of Marrakech and part of a small British-owned chain called Pure Riads. Sitting in the peaceful courtyard, watching songbirds dart between palm trees while you contemplate whether to wind down in the hamman, help yourself to a drink from the honesty bar or take a dip in the floodlit pool, is the perfect antidote to the charging donkey wagons and haggling merchants outside. Rooms are quite modern, with iPod docks and air conditioning, but the coloured walls and rich bedspreads give each a unique feel. There are four to choose from: the Colonial Room has a fantastic domed stone ceiling, and the oriental Tibet Room opens onto the patio. Dinner is eaten on the roof, where you’ll find a lofty pagoda and cushion-topped rattan furniture. A three course supper will set you back just €20, but book in advance as the cook buys fresh to order every day.”
